Multi-Disciplined Approach Seamlessly Integrates Complex New Systems With Existing Building Design
Problem
The Edgewood Hall at Harford Community College is one of the first buildings you see when you enter campus. This building is not only an attractive site on campus, it is home to several academic classrooms. However, the building was in need of modern updates complete with mechanical and electrical plumbing upgrades. The building faced:
- Building envelope deficiencies that threatened roof leaks
- Aging fire alarm and fire suppression systems that required replacement
- ADA deficiencies
The building also needed an addition to house new classrooms and an administrative office. New additions and modern systems needed to be seamlessly integrated with the Prairie-style architecture of the existing building.
Solution
StudioJAED has worked with the Maryland school on several campus improvement projects, including additions to a traditional farmhouse and HVAC renovations to the administration building. Multi-disciplined engineering and architecture expertise has proven essential on complex projects that require integrating existing building systems with new additions.
This expertise was critical in completing the Edgewood Hall renovations.
StudioJAED:
- Successfully disguised new mechanical system within architecture so no mechanical equipment was visible from the outside.
- Corrected building envelope deficiencies
- Replaced the fire alarm and fire suppression system
- Corrected ADA deficiencies
- Designed upgrades that seamlessly integrate with Prairie-style architecture
Impact
StudioJAED was able to design a solution that met the aggressive budget and satisfied program requirements. Our in-house team of architects and engineers were able to work with the school and contracting team to implement a solution that preserved the style while adding modern functionality.
