Seaford District-Wide Renovations
- Client: Seaford School District
- Project: Seaford District-Wide EnergyStar Implementation
- Square Footage: 512,000 square feet
In 1996, the Seaford School District launched an initiative to comprehensively analyze all District facilities to develop the Major Capital Improvement Plan for upgrades and additions to all of its schools. StudioJAED was retained to validate the established capital budget and provide design and construction administration services for the project.
StudioJAED reviewed previously established priority levels for recommended facility improvements within the Major Capital Plan, and provided recommendations for adjustments to meet the District’s educational program. Additionally, StudioJAED completed a review of capital expenditure requests, analyzing them for accuracy and completeness and processing the requests for inclusion in the Major Capital Program.
The initial phase of construction began in the summer of 1997 and included roofing renovations, window and door replacements, plumbing and heating system upgrades, electrical and technology upgrades, as well as improvements to ADA accessibility and life-safety systems. Subsequent phases of the major capital plan included additions at all six schools, comprehensive renovations and expansions to five of the school libraries, renovations and upgrades to five district kitchens and cafeterias, installation of a Districtwide energy management system, and the addition of air conditioning to all schools in the District. In total, the Major Capital Improvement Program encompassed five separate phases of work over nine years, with a total construction value of more than $46 million.
In 2005, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) awarded the Seaford School District the Energy Star Leader certificate for meeting the Agency’s stringent requirements for energy efficiency in all facilities within the District. Seaford is only the third school district in the United States to receive this award, and StudioJAED is proud to have played a role in helping to achieve this distinction. It continues to maintain the lowest energy use per square foot of any air-conditioned school district in the State of Delaware.
